19 May 2001 - 25 August 2001

Domestic Furniture is pleased to present a collaborative exhibition which is the product of a friendly dialogue between artists Catherine Opie and Roy McMakin.

The exhibition will continue from 19 May to 25 August 2001 with a reception for the artists Saturday, 19 May 2001 from 4 to 7 PM.

Cathy Opie has brought dignity and grace to her subjects, California’s pierced and tattooed gay and lesbian community. The “O” portfolio is Opie’s response to Mapplethorpe’s controversial “X” portfolio, an earlier document of a similar circle.

Roy McMakin is highly regarded for his exploration of the territory between art and applied design and issues of functionality. McMakin’s participation in this exhibition is a scultural response to ideas of support.

The exhibition will present the seven images from the “O” portfolio, a series of photogravure published by Susan Inglett at I.C. Editions, NYC and a sculptural support by Roy McMakin.

Cathy Opie was recently the subject of mid-career survey at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and solo exhibitions at Gorney Bravin & Lee, NYC and the Photographer’s Gallery, London. Opie is represented in Los Angeles by Regen Projects.

Roy McMakin has recently exhibited his work in the traveling exhibition, Against Design. Recent solo exhibitions include Feature, NYC and Mark Quint Gallery, La Jolla. Roy McMakin is the designer and owner of Domestic Furniture in Los Angeles an Seattle. He is represented by Marc Foxx in Los Angeles.

Domestic Furniture is located at 6150 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. The exhibition will be on view 19 May 2001 to 25 August 2001. Showroom hours are Wednesday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM or by appointment or chance.
