The ADAA: Beverly Semmes

Park Avenue Armory, 27 February - 1 March 2020
Booth D-18

Susan Inglett Gallery presents a series of painted canvases by Beverly Semmes, continuing the artist’s Feminist Responsibility Project (FRP). Following a successful first look at the 57th Carnegie International, Semmes expands the project transferring and enlarging images from 1990s era pornographic magazines. Operating as a censor, the artist wields paint to shield the women as they pose and perform. The partial concealment of the underlying image amplifies its constructed tableaux— both the camera and audience’s gazes objectify the female body. Semmes presents this discord not as mutually exclusive poles, but rather as a grey space in which queries about female sexuality take form.

Semmes has been honored with many solo exhibitions, including Locks Gallery, Philadelphia, PA; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; the ICA Philadelphia; the MCA Chicago; and The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College. Her work has recently be on display at Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2022); JOAN, Los Angeles (2022); Canada Gallery, NYC (2022); and Alexander McQueen, London, UK (2022). Semmes’s work can be found in the permanent collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC, among others.
