The ADAA: Hope Gangloff: Inner Landscapes

Susan Inglett Gallery is pleased to present Hope Gangloff: Inner Landscapes at the upcoming ADAA Art Show 2023 from 1-5 November 2023.

Agnès Varda once said, “If we open people up, we’d find landscapes.” Hope Gangloff, well-known for portraits that capture the essence of a generation, elevates instances overlooked in the maelstrom of a hurried life, and allows our eyes to adjust to the beauty found in nature or a quiet moment. The saturated colors and complex patterns once modeled by the denizens of Brooklyn now cloak summer campfires and studio shelves in sartorial splendor. With a sly wink to the characters that once populated her paintings, an assortment of artworks and objects fill each canvas with life and sentimental depth.

In Will Heinrich's recent New York Times review, he describes the artist’s work as “...a vision of the world that’s recognizable but heightened, like everyday reality with the volume turned up.” Capturing blissful moments of a summer well spent, the artist hits her signature “supple, sensual, optical stride.” Gangloff brings her unique vision to prolonged moments of dazzling reverie, a waking dream of evergreen trees and cerulean skies in an ensorcelled inner landscape.

HOPE GANGLOFF (b. 1974) was born in Amityville, NY, and attended The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. She is well known for her vibrant portrait and landscape paintings that combine a distinctive bright palette with intricate linework. Her early portraiture garnered attention for its intimate observation of relatable moments, from a road trip with friends to a late-night house party.  Gangloff’s work can seen  in "Forces of Nature: Voices That Shaped Environmentalism" at the National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C. and was recently exhibited in “Women Painting Women” at the Fort Worth Modern.  Solo exhibitions include the Cantor Arts Center, Stanford University; the Broad Art Museum, East Lansing; and Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C.; the Broad Art Museum, East Lansing; the Kemper Museum, Kansas City; and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, among others.
