A colossal mountainscape dominates the picture plane of "The Mercy Quartet," chiseled with splendid geometry and echoed throughout in bubble-like vignettes in the sky. Their summits overwhelm the scene in multiple variations, almost eclipsing the group of men at its center. The men appear to be entering a hellish landscape harkening back to O’Neil’s seminal triptych, Hell (2011). A monk stands outside the bubble, head in hands in a universal gesture of despair. Through this reference to medieval and early Renaissance devotional works, O’Neil conveys a near-religious plea for mercy for this small group, whether seeking salvation from this life or the next is part of the mystery.
