Three Figures in Cloud Hats and Purple Velvet Bathrobes at the Table exemplifies Beverly Semmes’s ability to merge the whimsical with the uncanny. The work presents three figures whose domestic intimacy is unsettled by the surreal presence of cloud-like hats, which obscure identity and blur the boundary between reality and dream worlds. Semmes’s use of soft, enveloping forms lends the scene a slightly theatrical quality. The work reflects Semmes’s ongoing interest in costume and concealment.
