The suit jacket traditionally serves as an emblem of authority and order; in the hands of Greg Smith it has been stripped to its basic form. Instead of wool or cotton, Smith has tailored this piece from aluminum mesh, its raw finish poking and prodding the wearer to evoke the discomfort felt by those ensnared within the System.
Every pocket and seam is weighted with rocks, symbolizing the burden the wearer carries. From the right breast pocket emerges an assemblage of wax caps stamped with letters, representing the degradation of contemporary language and referencing Smith’s fascination with the convoluted “legalese” developed by conspiracy theorist and self-proclaimed sovereign citizen David-Wynn: Miller, the subject of Smith's recent show, Every Void of DWMLC.NET.
