This is Maren Hassinger's 2025 work titled Cascade. At just over 13 feet in length, this piece is unlike much of the work in the show in its ephemerality. It is entirely composed of strips of the New York Times that have been torn, twisted and tied into long tendrils, then suspended from the ceiling. In combining the ritual of weaving with the material use of this newspaper of record, Hassinger explores how cultural activities can be used to explore identity. This piece quite literally twists this aspect of man-made culture into something reflective of nature, elevating mundane materials and asking the viewer to experience the work contemplatively, a core tenet of Hassinger's work.
