‘Taxonomies’ (2019) is comprised of forty-two hand-knitted constructions stretched over wooden frames. Combining dense protrusions of stitching with more open sections that resemble the patterns found in lace, Hansen creates a work that straddles the boundary between painting and sculpture. Despite their spontaneous appearance, the designs are derived from a computer algorithm, meaning Hansen is unaware of how the finished work will look until it is complete. A record of the artist’s creative decision-making, ‘Taxonomies’ (2019) embodies Hansen’s ongoing fascination with what he describes as "the idea that humans themselves embody an infinite number of potential algorithms."
