Parallel hatches of gradient tin form the illusion of three-dimensionality in Kobayashi’s Glass Cup. The tessellated surfaces of his green apples bring to mind the brushwork found in Cezanne's Still life with Apples, 1894. Close examination of Cezanne’s paint handling and Kobayashi’s tin marquetry allows the viewer to pull back the curtain, revealing the magic behind the artists' sleight of hand.
