After a fateful encounter with the work of Georges Seurat, Kobayashi sought to incorporate pointillistic styling into his own oeuvre. Executed in oil, the painting shows a modest bureau draped with delicate lace, rendered in Kobayashi’s signature densely packed, pointillist-like brushwork. Rather than relying on bold gestures, Kobayashi builds his forms through subtle repetition. Bureau with Lace shows a careful consideration of the still life painting of Paul Cézanne, placing objects in service to the larger composition. The artist's skill and deft paint handling is on full display here, the impression of transparency in the vessels alone is a remarkable achievement.
