Referencing Fred Moten’s theorized ‘Black Fugitivity’, Meko states “I, Michi Meko am a fugitive, I am on the run.” Wading Fugitive “It’s Not About the Fish, But the Water” – John Gill is not a romanticized landscape but an attempt to render the metaphysical relationship of isolated Blackness in the Wilderness of the American South. The composition evokes a sense of hope, anxiety, beauty, and terror, in short the Sublime.
