ERIC FERTMAN (b. 1974) imparts a sense of humanity and striking emotional range to a simple block of wood. He brings a disquieting edge to his compositions, occupying a space between abstract modernism and Saturday morning cartoons. A broken light fixture, a roving cat crafted from geometric forms, sinuous pink structures with titles like “Blush”— these subjects all underscore Fertman’s cheeky, humorous approach to his art. Fertman’s work was recently on view in solo exhibitions at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA), Winston-Salem, and the Kemper Museum, Kansas City. Reviews of his work have appeared in Artforum, The New York Times, and Sculpture Magazine, among others.
