"From afar, Interlock resembles tree branches and recalls sculptures such as Martin Puryear’s wood Ring series (for example, Noatak (1979)). But proximity reveals the metal surface and changes the work, initiating the language of substitution that becomes so central. In Interlock, what is on view seems like a substitute slated to fulfil a role once occupied by natural forms. The frayed edges — overtly formed by a physical hand wrenching and unravelling the tightly wrapped cord — entangle references to hair and branches with something more malevolent and fraught, and the title Interlock aptly conveys the sense of these competing associations and their inextricability in turn."
