Two Figures in Purple Bathrobes and Cloud Hats at the Window exemplifies Beverly Semmes’s ability to merge the whimsical with the uncanny. The work presents two figures whose domestic intimacy is unsettled by the surreal presence of cloud-like hats, which obscure identity and blur the boundary between reality and dream worlds. Semmes’s use of soft, enveloping forms lends the scene a slightly theatrical quality,. The work reflects Semmes’s ongoing interest in costume and concealment.
