Woven using a blend of synthetic and natural fibres, hand-dyed and spun by hand, the tactile composition of ‘Homeostatic Havoc’ comprises loose, organic forms, raised textures and blocks of vibrant colour. The painterly, unpredictable surfaces of Channing Hansen’s works are generated by a computer algorithm, guiding the artist to create intricate combinations of colour, fibre and knit. This work is a response formulated using "the bifurcation theory of dynamical chaos’, which the artist describes as, “a mathematical diagram of how natural systems reach equilibrium. It connects neuron firing, fractals, and animal populations".
‘Homeostatic Havoc’ is a complex and visually compelling work that exemplifies the strength of Hansen’s technique. Describing this work as a 'self portrait of a different kind’ the intensity of his connection to the materials and process resonates, whilst his use of the algorithm allows the artist to codify and react to nuanced concerns. Hansen explains, “I’ve been obsessing about how even slight changes in variables can cause explosive changes in a system while it seeks its equilibrium … The algorithm helped me to connect what was going on in my internal world with what was happening externally, to understand how sudden disequilibrium externally produces the same thing internally. Both realms seek to re-establish equilibrium—a pursuit that, of late, has seemed to be thwarted at every turn.”
