Second in the series, Umbilicus II continues to explore Jarvis’s interest in scale, material relationships and organic form. Composed of stone, glass, mortar and wisteria branches, the sculpture links two distinct elements through a looping structure that suggests connection and exchange. Jarvis's use of naturally durable and ephemeral materials highlights the contrast between stability and change, a theme that appears throughout her oeuvre. In this form she employs the use of color, there are spots of orange amongst the natural stones further paralleling the variation found in the natural world. Created from all natural elements, balancing strength and fragility, Umbilicus II invites further reflection on the bonds that connect humans being to one another and to the natural world.
