Marcia Kure’s Beloved series continues her exploration of the complex histories of trade, colonialism, and slavery. Drawing on images from fashion and ethnographic publications, as well as Oprah Winfrey’s Journey...Marcia Kure’s Beloved series continues her exploration of the complex histories of trade, colonialism, and slavery. Drawing on images from fashion and ethnographic publications, as well as Oprah Winfrey’s Journey to the Beloved, Kure creates works in which histories of colonial subjugation are referenced in the elements that comprise the collage. Here, the spotted octopus, found in the Atlantic Ocean, conjures the Middle Passage; the angel wings speak to the loss and trauma of slavery; the ringed hand to the strength of community.Exhibitions
