Allison Miller plays on our assumptions, challenging the notion of certainty; she lays down the gauntlet. In System, Miller utilizes the trompe-l'œil effect to create a dissonance between reality and perception. Her trapezoidal canvas subverts our expectation of a square canvas and emphasizes that disposition by "squaring" the shaped canvas herself. Bands of color and squiggled lines section off the block. In Miller's abstraction, every move is considered and demands our attention..even the squiggles. By unsettling the viewer’s expectations, Miller examines how experience takes shape in the gap between what we think we see and what is actually there.
